RANGER ROLL YOUR UNIFORM WHEN YOU PACK

At some point you’re going to have to pack your uniform. Use the convenient Ranger Roll method (also known as the Army Roll method) to maximise the compactness of your packing job and to keep your tactical clothing well-protected during transport so it’s ready to use.

ORGANISED AND LIGHT PACKING

Whether you’re packing a 72-hour bag for deployment, looking for the best way to pack your military bag or a carry-on bag for rifle drills, you’ll find the Ranger Roll a handy technique that makes it easy to keep the inside of your bag smartly organised (so you can always know exactly where things are). Further, the Ranger Roll method—which is a more effective and less space-consuming packing technique—helps your stowed uniform come back out of the bag with hardly any trace of wrinkling.

In short, if you pack your tactical clothing using the Ranger Roll method, those items will take up less space in your bag—and so you’ll be able to carry with you more of what you need. Also, the smaller footprints of your Ranger Roll’ed army combat uniforms will enable you to better organise your bag’s contents, which means you’ll do a lot less fumbling around for items you need to retrieve from it. So, the Ranger Roll method isn’t just about what you can or can’t pack, but also about knowing exactly where things are and being able to pack small in order to avoid having to bring extra bags. Essentially, Ranger Roll is the way you ensure that the packed uniform holds its shape even if it’s necessary to repack or to fiddle around with any of the other gear stowed in the bag.

PREP THE UNIFORM'S FEATURES

Before you begin, you first must properly prepare your tactical clothes for Ranger Rolling. Don’t skip this initial step if you want to be able to pack your uniform as neatly as possible so it doesn’t wrinkle, and have it ready for immediate use when you pull it from the bag.

1. REMOVE ALL ADD-ONS

Detach from the uniform all air/pac® supports, elbow pads, and patches (especially add-ons that don’t easily bend or readily spring back to their original shape). NOTE: If any of the add-on items listed above are non-detachable, you probably won’t be able to Ranger Roll your uniform.

2. SPREAD THE MATERIAL

Next, spread the clothing on a hard, flat surface. Smooth all wrinkles to crispen the fabric prior to folding. You may need to repeat this smoothing action to tame any wrinkles that appear after each of the further steps described below.

3. SECURE CLOSURES & FREE THE CORDS

Make sure all zippers and buttons are secured, pockets emptied, belts and buckles removed, knee-height adjustments released, cuffs unrolled, cords freed, and hood unfolded. If you're using one of our hooded jackets, you can follow this guide on how to convert a Hood/Harness® hood into a collar later.

RANGER ROLL A TACTICAL JACKET

Ranger Rolling a tactical jacket is a bit tougher nut to crack (unless you’re packing our softshell jacket or any lightly insulated winter jacket). If your jacket includes our integrated Hood/Harness® System hood, start by unfolding the hood from the collar.

1. FORM THE HEM CUFF

Create the hem cuff which folds 1/4 of the way UP the torso of the jacket in the direction towards the collar.

2. FOLD THE LEFT SIDE WITH THE SLEEVE

Pull the left sleeve and torso inward so that it folds vertically from the hem of the collar down to the hem cuff.

3. FOLD THE LEFT SLEEVE TWICE

Vertically fold the sleeve in half by pulling the edge closest to the centre toward the outer left edge of the jacket. Stop when the wrist cuff aligns with the outer left edge of the jacket. Fold the sleeve again in half, this time aligning the elbow with the outer left edge.

4. REPEAT STEPS 2 AND 3

Do everything you just did in Steps 2 and 3 above, only this time do them on the right half of the jacket.

5. ROLL THE JACKET

Tightly roll the jacket starting from the collar and ending at the hem.

6. WRAP THE POUCH

Wrap the pouch around the rolled-up jacket to prevent the Ranger Roll from coming undone.

HOW TO RANGER ROLL YOUR COMBAT SHIRT

In this video, you'll learn how to pack your combat shirt the same way you would a BDU blouse. Meanwhile, by Ranger Rolling your combat shirt into your pants (instead of Ranger Rolling each separately) just a single leg of the pants is likely to get saturated if the combined articles of clothing are exposed to wetness.

RANGER ROLL A T-SHIRT

The easiest garment to Ranger Roll is a T-shirt made from a mix of polyester, cotton, and elastane (which results in a material that’s soft and wrinkle-resistant). With T-shirts made from other types of materials, you’ll have keep smoothing the fabric at each step of the Ranger Roll process.

1. FORM THE HEM CUFF

Grasping the bottom of the T-shirt, fold it one-quarter of the way up toward the collar.

2. FOLD THE LEFT SIDE WITH THE SLEEVE

Using one hand to grasp the left side of the T-shirt at its collar and the other hand to grasp it at the hem cuff you created in the previous step, fold the T-shirt toward the right side along its vertical axis.

3. FOLD THE LEFT SLEEVE

Fold the left sleeve outward, aligning its tip to the hem cuff.

4. REPEAT STEPS 2 AND 3

Do everything you just did in Steps 2 and 3 above, only this time do them on the right half of the T-shirt.

5. ROLL THE T-SHIRT

Starting at the neck, tightly roll the T-shirt all the way down to the hem cuff. For best results,  use your hand to smooth the fabric as you go.

6. WRAP THE POUCH

Upon reaching the bottom, wrap the pouch around your rolled up T-shirt. This will keep it in place.

RANGER ROLL COMBAT PANTS

Before packing your pants, test to see if they’re easier to fold from the front or the back. Certain types of pants (like our Striker XT Gen.3 Combat Pants) now come with width-adjusting zipper along the lower back of each leg, which makes it easier to pull the free leg over the roll while also giving you extra storage capacity.

1. FOLD THE PANTS IN HALF

Fold the pants in half along its vertical axis, laying one leg atop the other.

2. FORM AN "L" SHAPE

Fold the leg upward at a 90-degree angle until it meets the knee (so that it looks like you’ve shaped it into the letter “L”). To extend the space available to accommodate more items (your field shirt, for instance), bring the folded leg past the knee and up to the crotch.

3. ROLL THE PANTS

Starting at the waist, tightly roll the pants down to the end of the flat-facing pant leg.

4. TUCK IN THE ROLL

While holding the rolled part of the pants, pull the free leg over the roll, turn the free leg inside out, and push the roll all the way in. Use the space that remains to additionally store both the Ranger Rolled T-shirt and combat shirt.

5. MAKE A BDU PACK

Use the extra space to store your field shirt and T-shirt to complete your BDU pack.

6. SECURE YOUR MAKESHIFT PACK

Securely store your makeshift pack by tightening the drawcords or strings (these typically are located at the end of each leg of your BDU pants).
